The Chevening Scholarship introduces such generous support, but how much do you actually get? In this article, I will introduce what was covered while I studied in the UK.
Covered Category
The official website states the following:
– Payment of tuition fees (see point 1.2.a in relation to MBA fee caps).
– Economy travel to and from your country of residence by an approved route for you only.
– An arrival allowance.
– The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for you only.
– A departure allowance.
– A contribution of up to £75 for TB testing, where this is required.
– A travel top-up allowance.
– A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses.

For MBA, there is a cap of £22,000 due to the high tuition fees. Living and other expenses are also likely to vary according to nationality, year of study and city of destination, so it is honestly difficult to know how much support you will receive.
Actual Amount covered by Chevening Scholarship
The following data is mine from a little while ago, but I will show you the actual amount I received.
- Tuition fees (£12,000)
- Living expenses (£882 per month)
- Round-trip travel costs
- Arrival allowance (£550)
- Return allowance (£342)
- UK visa application fee
- Travel expenses to attend Chevening events
In my case, the tuition fees were higher than these amounts, so I had to pay some of them out of my own pocket, but I received a Chevening scholarship and a partial tuition fee waiver from the university, resulting in me paying only about a third of the tuition fees.
Round-trip travel expenses were provided by British Airways in economy through a designated travel agent.
The arrival allowance, if I remember correctly, was provided in the form of a ‘gift card’ containing money, which could be used to make purchases immediately. It was really helpful to receive a large sum of money, as it costs a lot of money to buy daily necessities and other things when setting up a new life.
Furthermore, during the study abroad period, events for scholars were held in the city where the university is located and in London, and the scholarship covered all the travel expenses, which was really helpful.
FAQ
how much is chevening arrival allowance?
In my case, the arrival allowance was £550. I decided to live in an apartment for the first year, so I had to pay a lot for my life. However, most of the apartments in the UK provide furniture including dining tables/chairs, desks, beds, etc. I did not have to purchase big furniture. It helps me a lot to save my money.
I also lived in a dormitory while staying in the U.K. It also provides basic furniture such as desk, bed and kitchen. You can move in with your suitcases.
You would be able to purchase basic items for £550. I would recommend using IKEA, Primark etc.
how much is chevening monthly stipend?
When I studied in the UK, the monthly stipend was £882. The amount might be different depending on inflation or the city of living. My flat cost £115 pppw. So I could cover the flat fee and food fee easily. I had to cook every meal and bring my lunch box, but I could enjoy dinner at a restaurant sometimes.
Note: pppw means per per person, per week.
Summary
I haven’t calculated the total amount, but a rough calculation shows that I received at least £30,000.
I really can’t bow down to the UK government any more. Naturally I got to feel I would like to do something for the British Government.
